A family guide for classic car owners

Who's going to tell them what it's worth?

One collector figured that if he died on a Tuesday, his family would junk most of his cars and sell the rest for $500 apiece on Wednesday. When You're Gone is the 100-page guide, and the binder, that makes sure yours don't.

Here's the trouble with Wednesday

The person selling the car knows less about it than the person buying it.

She knows what the car meant. He knows what it's worth, and which numbers on it make the difference. And on Wednesday she is grieving, and he is standing in the driveway with cash.

Chapter 3

Can you read your own VIN?

This is the yellow Camaro's. Tap each part. The book does the same for GM, Ford and Mopar cars, with real data plates and fender tags.

Tap a part of the VIN.

Notice what isn't there. Nothing in that VIN says RS, SS or 350.

Questions

Fair questions, straight answers.

Is this a printed book?

No. It's a PDF you download right away, in two editions: full color, and a print-saver that uses much less ink. It's laid out on US Letter paper to print at home and go in a three-ring binder.

Is this legal advice?

No. It's general information, written so you can walk into your attorney's office knowing what to ask. The legal chapter says so plainly, and so do we. Laws are different in every state.

My car isn't a famous muscle car. Is this still for me?

Yes. Most of the book is about any classic: titles, paperwork, honest values, selling safely and leaving clear instructions. The numbers chapter covers GM, Ford and Chrysler cars from the 1950s to 1980.

Where do the stories and numbers come from?

From Hagerty, Sports Car Market, Old Cars Weekly, the IRS, state DMVs, club forums and news reports. Every source is listed in the back of the book, so you can check any of it.

Who should read it, me or my family?

You read the chapters and fill in the forms. Your family uses the binder you leave them. The first two pages are written for them.

How long does it take?

Read a chapter a weekend and do the short checklist at the end of it. The forms take about an hour per car.
